A little clarity before you decide
A longer-term approach to unwanted hair
Shaving and waxing remove hair temporarily. Laser hair reduction directs light toward pigment in the hair follicle, where that energy becomes heat. When treatment affects a susceptible follicle, future growth may decrease. Because hairs move through different growth stages, one appointment cannot reach every follicle at its most responsive point.
Our Sacramento practice uses the Aerolase Neo Elite, a 1064-nanometer Nd:YAG laser. Device choice matters, but so do your skin tone, hair color, medical history, and the way treatment is planned. We welcome patients from Elk Grove and nearby communities at our single Sacramento office.
What improvement can mean for you
A useful result might mean slower regrowth, fewer coarse hairs, or needing to shave less often. It may also make a grooming routine less irritating when repeated close shaving contributes to razor bumps. The aim is a reduction in unwanted hair, not a guarantee that every hair will disappear or never return.
The plan is tailored to your skin tone and often involves a series of appointments. A fixed course or percentage of clearance would overlook differences in treatment area, hormones, hair density, and individual response. We review whether treatment is meeting your goals instead of assuming every person needs the same course.
For medical background, read American Academy of Dermatology: laser hair removal preparation. Your consultation applies this information to your own health and goals.
Hair color and skin tone both matter
Laser treatment depends on pigment in the hair. Dark, coarse hair generally responds more predictably than fine or lightly pigmented hair. White and gray hair lack a useful pigment target, and blond or red hair can respond poorly. We will explain these limitations rather than recommend a course that is unlikely to meet your goals.
Nd:YAG technology can be an option for darker skin tones, but darker skin is not automatically risk-free. Your natural skin color, recent tanning, tendency to develop dark marks, and previous laser experiences all affect planning. A tan or sunburn can make treatment less appropriate, even if you have been treated successfully before.
Your consultation and treatment-area assessment
Tell us which hair bothers you and why. We will discuss hair growth patterns, previous removal methods, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding, healing difficulties, scarring, and any rash or infection. Bring up sudden or unusual changes in hair growth, which may need medical evaluation rather than simply another cosmetic treatment.
Facial and body hair raise different questions, including skin sensitivity, hair density, and the area you want to preserve. Whether a particular area is offered and appropriate for you is confirmed at consultation. Treatment should not pass over tattoos or suspicious skin lesions, and areas close to the eyes have specific safety restrictions. An assessment or test area may be appropriate before a larger treatment.
How to prepare without irritating your skin
Avoid tanning, tanning beds, and self-tanner before treatment, following the preparation interval you receive. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and tell us about recent sun exposure. Waxing, plucking, and electrolysis can remove the follicular target, so ask how long to avoid them. Shaving is often compatible with a treatment plan, but timing should follow your instructions.
Share a complete medication and supplement list, including isotretinoin, topical retinoids, and products that make your skin more sensitive. Do not stop prescribed medicine on your own. Arrive with clean skin and tell us if you have used irritating products, developed a cold sore, or noticed a new skin change since booking.
What the appointment feels like
Your provider confirms the area and checks your skin before treatment. Appropriate laser eye protection is essential for everyone in the treatment space. The handpiece delivers short pulses across the selected area. You may notice warmth, a snapping sensation, or discomfort; a comfortable experience cannot be guaranteed.
Appointment length depends on the area and assessment. Gel, cooling, and comfort measures vary between laser systems, so an experience with a different device may not be a reliable guide to this visit. Tell us promptly if the sensation becomes unexpectedly painful. Settings and the decision to continue are clinical judgments.
Recovery, aftercare, and warning signs
Temporary redness, tenderness, or swelling around follicles can occur. Many people resume ordinary activities soon afterward, but visible irritation may last longer than expected. Follow your individual advice about exercise, heat, fragranced products, exfoliation, and when to shave again. Keep the area clean, avoid picking, and use the recommended gentle moisturizer and sun protection.
Burns, blistering, infection, scarring, and darker or lighter patches are possible. Uncommon unwanted stimulation of hair growth can also occur, particularly in some facial or neck areas. Contact the practice for blistering, worsening pain, spreading redness, drainage, or an unexpected change in skin color. Severe symptoms or any eye injury need urgent medical assessment.
A realistic course, reviewed as you go
Treated hairs may shed over time rather than vanish immediately. A series is often needed because growth cycles vary. We set spacing and reassess response instead of assigning the same number of visits to everyone. Regrowth and maintenance treatments may be relevant, especially where hormonal influences continue.
Before you commit, discuss the specific area, expected limitations, recovery, and confirmed cost with your provider. Ask for a clear quote before agreeing to a course of treatment. If ingrown hairs are your main concern, our PFB information explains why reducing hair and managing the surrounding inflammation are related but different goals.
Your questions, welcomed
Laser Hair Reduction FAQs
Is laser hair reduction the same as permanent hair removal?
No. We describe the goal as long-term hair reduction. Some follicles may stop producing visible hair, while others produce finer regrowth or remain active. Hormonal changes can introduce new growth. Maintenance may be helpful, and complete permanent removal is not promised.
Can I shave between appointments?
Often, yes, once the treated skin has settled and your provider says it is appropriate. Avoid waxing or plucking during the treatment course unless specifically advised otherwise. Shaving does not pull out the follicular target, but shaving irritated skin can worsen discomfort.
Will it work on my gray or fine facial hair?
Gray and white hair generally lack the pigment needed for laser targeting. Very fine, blond, or red hair may respond poorly. Facial hair also deserves discussion of unwanted stimulation and hormonal causes. A consultation can help you avoid an unsuitable treatment.
Can laser treatment help razor bumps?
Reducing susceptible hair can reduce a trigger for recurring ingrown hairs. Existing inflammation, infection, scars, or pigment may need separate assessment and care. Laser treatment is not a substitute for diagnosing a persistent or painful bump.
Can I have treatment before a vacation?
Tell us about travel, sun exposure, swimming, and important events before scheduling. Treatment on recently tanned skin or immediately before significant sun exposure may be inappropriate. Allow time for recovery rather than assuming that minimal downtime means no restrictions.
Is a standard aesthetic consultation free?
Yes. All standard aesthetic consultations are completely free ($0), with no reservation deposit, consultation fee, credit card requirement or obligation to purchase treatment. Treatment costs are separate and will be discussed before any treatment is performed.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my consultation?
We kindly request at least 24 hours’ notice as a courtesy. Free consultations have no cancellation or no-show fees. Clients arriving more than 10 minutes late may need to reschedule. Repeated no-shows may result in restricted online scheduling, with future appointments arranged directly through our office. Contact the practice at 916-910-0018 to change your appointment.
